Any environment is transient in the face of inevitable change. Thus, there is a certain inherent foolishness in seeking to prevent the extinction of each individual extent species. Any species that goes extinct will leave an ecological niche for a new species to evolve to adapt to. At the same time, it is better that humanity be the custodians of the Earth, than we be the rapists of the Earth. We should avoid poisoning our environment wherever possible.
